Kambosos vs Haney Betting Breakdown

In a huge showdown this weekend, George Kambosos and Devin Haney clash to crown an undisputed lightweight champion live on Sky Sports. ‘The Dream’ Devin Haney opens as the favourite in this matchup. George Kambosos remains the underdog despite his huge upset of Teofimo Lopez. Here we will provide a Kambosos vs Haney betting breakdown, offering you the best betting tips and insights.

Betting Breakdown: Recent Form

George Kambosos comes into this contest off the back of his epic victory over Teofimo Lopez which crowned him as the WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight world champion. Without a doubt this is the marquee victory of his career, many saw him as a routine title defence for Teofimo Lopez until Kambosos showed what he is really about. Before this, the only other names of importance on his record are two split decision victories over Mickey Bey and Lee Selby. Despite the split decision verdicts Kambosos won those contests fairly comfortably if unspectacularly. Seemingly Kambosos fights to the level of competition, as when faced with a challenge like Lopez he rose to the occasion.

Haney also comes into this fight off of momentum. After difficulty finding credible opponents and treading water slightly, his last two wins came against contenders Joseph Diaz Jr and Jorge Linares. Haney outboxed both of those opponents for large portions of the contests, although did face adversity in the later rounds against Linares. Against Diaz Jr though he looked in great condition and dished out a career best performance.

Betting Breakdown: The Matchup

This matchup offers some intriguing questions that will have to be asked of both fighters. On paper Haney’s superior technical ability and wicked jab should allow him to outbox Kambosos over the course of 12 rounds in a similar fashion to the Diaz fight. Kambosos will have to come forward to win this fight which serves Haney well who will try and matador him.

Where questions arrive is because of the fragilities that Haney has shown, particularly in the Linares fight, that someone like Kambosos will capitalise on. Down the stretch, Linares caught up to Haney and showed vulnerabilities in his chin and durability late on in the fight. If Haney is someone who is going to have trouble in the Championship rounds when opponents start turning up the heat, then Kambosos is possibly the worst opponent he could be facing in the division. ‘Ferocious’ is an absolutely relentless fighter who showed the amount of dog and will to win that he has in the Lopez fight. He has lightning fast hands and is willing to throw caution the wind when needs be.

I think Haney is a quality fighter and style wise think he should beat Kambosos well on points. It is still hard to gauge how good Kambosos actually is because frankly Teofimo Lopez fought like a bonehead in their fight. What is not in question though is his viciousness, engine and desire to win. If the fragilities that Haney showed in the Linares fight was a one off I think he wins well on points here. However, there is a nagging feeling that these kinds of attributes will get exploited again, and out of anyone in the division Kambosos would be the one to capitalise on any chin or durability issues down the stretch.

The Betting Picks

The safe pick here is to take Haney by decision at odds of around 10/11

Or sprinkle some money on Kambosos Jr to win in rounds 9-12 at odds of 14/1. I like this play and think it offers good value for money for the reasons explained.
